Figure 90 Curlleaf mountain-mahogany, Cercocarpus ledifolius

HABITAT AND RANGE: Grows in the intermountain West. In California it is found between 1,000 m (3,300 ft) and 2,700 m (9,000 ft) in shrublands, forests, and woodlands of all the major mountain ranges except those of the central coast.

REMARKS: Two forms of curlleaf mountain-mahogany grow in California. In C. l var. ledifolius the midrib on the lower leaf bade is obscured by hair, and in C. l var. intermontanus the midrib is not. The first form is more common in the Great Basin. A similar species, C. intricatus, which has leaves more tightly rolled, grows in the eastern Sierra Nevada and nearby mountains of the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts. Curlleaf mountain-mahogany is valuable forage for wildlife. Stems have been used as arrow shafts, digging tools, and spears. The inner bark has medicinal properties.
